22 NOVEMBER MARKET

Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas
2023

Located in a state renowned for its natural beauty and handcrafted goods but also with areas of high marginalization, such as the Patria Nueva neighborhood, is the 22 de Noviembre Market. This project is part of a strategic plan for the urban improvement of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas.

On a lot defined by the previous building—which had to be demolished due to its extremely poor condition—the design of the new market stems from an analysis of the site to create a program that meets the needs of the inhabitants and serves as a blank canvas for the community.

Based on a 3.60-meter grid, the project is built on a reinforced concrete structure that modulates the building and defines the spaces between the vendors. In addition, large barrel vaults emerge from the structure to infuse the place with character and excitement. A sequence of red brick walls further defines the edges towards the street.

Moreover, a series of internal courtyards and multi-use spaces blur the boundaries between the exterior and interior to create a public space where the barriers between being inside or outside disappear. In this way, the new building provides the Patria Nueva neighborhood with a dignified and safe space where inhabitants can share the richness of their products as well as the multiplicity of their experiences.
